At the end of 2020, we won the Design Contract for the restoration, refurbishment, and extension of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank Headquarters (Central Bank of Hungary) in an invited design competition.
During the design development, we paid special attention to the preservation of the building's historical values, and its value-based restoration by the original state - realized in the period between 1902-05. Subsequent and later alterations and additions unrelated to the building's traffic system, spatial structure, and design quality were dismantled, and removed.
Following in the footsteps of Ignác Alpár, we considered the building a total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), where architecture forms a coordinated unit together with fine arts, industrial arts, engineering structures, and landscape architecture elements.
We expanded the building below the courtyard and on the top floors. We designed a roof with a large overhang above the newly installed roof level pulled back from the plane of the external facade, which floats over the listed building. The interior spaces on the roof level below are realized with a generous and spacious design. Green roofs and terraces are typically created on new building parts, and the interior spaces are enriched with vegetation. The glass roof of the inner courtyard was shaped with a crystal structure, so we created a covered atrium.
In addition to the spatial and architectural realisation of the new functional requirements according to the Design Brief, workplaces are created with comfort parameters in line with today's modern office buildings with WELL Gold precertification.
